Your orthodontic evaluation
Your first appointment with us is one of the most important ones you’ll have. It’s our chance to know more about each other, listen to your concerns, and offer possible treatment solutions. You’ll also receive an oral examination by Dr. Krieger or Dr. Rasmussen and a panoramic X-ray. Don’t worry; this process is completely painless!
We pack a lot into your first visit, so it tends to last a little longer than your follow-up appointments. You can expect to spend about an hour with us as we discuss your medical and dental history, perform an exam, and talk about what comes next!
During your exam, your orthodontist will look inside your mouth to observe the development of your teeth and bite. They may also ask questions like whether the jaws make noise when your mouth opens or closes or if you have any chewing or swallowing problems. During your initial consultation, the information we collect will help us determine if you have any orthodontic issues that require treatment and when that treatment should begin.
Whether you’re planning to begin treatment now or later, this appointment is the best time to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. To ensure you fully understand the orthodontic process, our team will discuss the following topics with you in detail:
- any oral issues you’re experiencing
- if treatment is needed immediately
- what treatment options are available to correct the problem
- an estimate of how long we expect your treatment to take
- the total investment required for your new smile
- any payment or financing options we have available to you

What comes next?
Once your initial evaluation is complete, we’ll conduct a treatment consultation to explain every aspect of your treatment in detail. This includes a complete clinical diagnosis regarding the nature of the problem and a written summary of our findings, along with a detailed plan that outlines your treatment, goals, and estimated fees. We encourage questions and provide ample time to answer any you may have!
Finally, we’ll discuss your treatment options, time frames, and financial arrangements. You’ll leave our office with a clear understanding of what your unique needs are, what your treatment plan will consist of, and how long we expect treatment to last. If you decide to move forward with the process, we will set you up to get your orthodontic appliance!
After your appliance is placed or fitted, you can expect follow-up appointments with us every 6-8 weeks or so. During these visits, our doctors will adjust your appliance if necessary, monitor the movement of your teeth, and check that everything is progressing as it should be.
Because they’re an essential part of your orthodontic treatment, we encourage you only to cancel or reschedule these check-ups if necessary. If you’re running late or can’t make your appointment for any reason, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible. We’ll be happy to reschedule your appointment for another day to keep your treatment on track!
