Is Invisalign Worth It?

At first, it can be overwhelming to learn that you or your child need orthodontic treatment. Of course, the thought of a healthy new smile is exciting, you may also have a lot of questions about your options and what your treatment will look like. Fortunately, modern orthodontic technology means that patients have more choice than ever before when it comes to treatment options! Here at Krieger Orthodontics, these options include traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign clear aligners. Invisalign is currently the most popular clear aligner alternative to braces available, and it is not hard to see why. But is Invisalign worth it? Keep reading to learn more.

Invisalign makes treatment nearly invisible

The flexibility that aligners offer is one of the most significant reasons for their popularity. Invisalign clear aligners are barely noticeable in most cases, so you don’t need to worry about that anxiety a mouth full of metal can cause. Better yet, since the aligners can be removed for short periods, clear aligners are also perfect for any special event when a patient wants their natural smile to shine through, such as proms, weddings, or senior pictures.

Invisalign makes it easier to keep your smile healthy during treatment

A good oral hygiene routine is an important part of any day, but even more so during your orthodontic treatment. This can take some getting used to with traditional braces, especially in the early days. Brushing and flossing around the brackets and bands can be time-consuming, making it harder to remove any lingering food particles or plaque. Invisalign aligners are simply removed before brushing and flossing as normal! Caring for the aligners themselves could not be easier, either. There are special kits designed to clean them, or they can be gently brushed using toothpaste and a soft toothbrush.

The flexibility you need with Invisalign

No other treatment can match the freedom and flexibility of Invisalign, thanks to the fact that you can remove the aligners. For example, you don’t have to worry about food restrictions, one of the most significant learning curves with traditional braces. Sticky and crunchy foods don’t get along with brackets, bands, and wires, so you’re left without your favorite foods. With Invisalign, you can still eat anything you want, any time you would like. Simply remove the aligner before eating, then put it back in when you are done.

Invisalign may work more quickly than braces in some cases

No two patients will respond to treatment in the same way, so the total treatment time will always be different depending on the specifics of the situation. We can’t give a guaranteed answer regarding how long your orthodontic treatment will take.

One important thing to remember is that patient compliance is an essential part of the successful treatment with Invisalign. For the system to work correctly, you will need to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day throughout the treatment process. You will also be responsible for switching your aligners out for the next in the series every 1-2 weeks, allowing them to keep up with the movements your teeth are making. If you do not keep up your schedule, your treatment may take longer and not provide the results you are looking for.

If you’re fully compliant during your entire Invisalign treatment, it can take anywhere from about 6 to 18 months. This may actually be faster than braces treatment, depending on your needs.

Invisalign can successfully treat a wide range of orthodontic issues

In their earlier days, Invisalign aligners were really only used to correct simple spacing issues or mild crowding. The design of the aligners was much improved as the system began to grow in popularity. Invisalign can now be used to treat the following conditions effectively:

  • gaps between teeth
  • crowding
  • deep overbite
  • open bite
  • crossbite
  • excessive overjet

Special features for teens

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen work the same way and are based on the same technology. However, Invisalign Teen was developed with features that meet the unique needs of teenage patients, including:

Compliance indicators

We’ve already mentioned how substantial compliance is for successful treatment with Invisalign. But we understand that teens might need a little extra help remembering to wear their aligners for the correct amount of time. You must wear your aligners as directed by Dr. Krieger to work correctly. The compliance indicators incorporated into the Invisalign Teen aligners fade from blue to clear, providing parents and orthodontists with a visual approximation of wear. This lets them know if the patient is holding up their end of the treatment bargain!

Eruption tabs

This feature accommodates the growth of the second molars in young adults, helping to keep space open for unerupted teeth and to treat a broader range of conditions with Invisalign.

Replacement aligners

Teens might be a little more prone to losing or breaking an aligner. It happens! Although teens should always treat their aligners with care, there is no need to worry if this occurs. Invisalign Teen will provide up to six replacement aligners at no charge, just in case.

By now, you’re probably excited about the many benefits Invisalign treatment provides. However, be aware that it may not be the best option for everyone. The aligners are most successful for teen and adult patients with mild to moderate orthodontic issues.

They tend to be most successful for teen and adult patients with mild to moderate orthodontic issues. Cases that are particularly complex or severe may require more precise tooth control than a removable aligner can achieve.
